Watercolour Prints of Scotland

This section contains a number of prints from a series of paintings of Borthwick in Midlothian, one of the artist's favourite haunts. These illustrate some of the valley's interesting features in compositions such as Borthwick Castle from the Gore Burn; Winter, Gore Burn; Borthwick Mains; Borthwick Castle from the Bridge and Reflections, Gore Burn. The nearby ruin of Crichton Castle is also featured.
Blackness Castlelies on its southern shore of the Firth of Forth and is characterised by its barmkin wall which gives the impression of a ship's deck in plan. The ruins of the fourteenth century impregnable fortress of Tantallon Castle, the family seat of the infamous 'Red Douglas', are situated near North Berwick and look out over the Bass Rock to the North Sea.
Linlithgow Palace, West Lothian, which is the subject of the painting Linlithgow Palace at Dusk, was a favourite residence of Scottish kings and in its heyday it was considered to be the finest palace in Scotland, hence its title of the 'Scottish Windsor'. It was also the birthplace of Mary Queen of Scots. Craigmillar Castle in Edinburgh was a favourite retreat for the young queen; it is situated overlooking part of the outskirts of the city appropriately known as Little France. Neidpath Castle, Peebles is a good example of a typical Border stronghold.
Rosslyn Castle, Rosslyn Chapel South Aspect and Sunrise and Snow, Rosslyn Chapel are prints of two of Midlothian's famous buildings, particularly the chapel with its myriad of stone carvings and intriguing history. Cats' Walk, Old Dunbar is a reminder of a bygone age.
The Yarrow valley, acclaimed by William Wordsworth, and so well loved by Sir Walter Scott and James Hogg, the Ettrick Shepherd, is represented by Yarrow near the Gordon Arms; St. Mary's Loch and Loch o' the Lowes. These images of 'lone St. Mary's silent lake', soft rolling Border hills and gentle river contrast with the Isle of Arran's vivid mountain scenery and fast flowing stream depicted in Glen Sannox Burn.

The Highlands are represented by the magnificent view of Castle Stalker, Loch Linnhe. The image Deserted Landscape, Loch Sgioport, South Uist conjures up memories of the effect of the infamous Highland and Island Clearances of the eighteenth century.
